Woohoo found a good morning coffee alternative!

January 12th, 2015 at 10:45 am

I got these Moccona pre-mixed caramel lattes at a box of 10 for $2.64 (they are normally $5.30) and wasn't sure how I'd go because I'm the sort of person who needs *strong* coffee in the morning.

I normally have pods. From the Nespresso shop they are about $7-$8 for 10, from the supermarket you can get a decent type of pod for $6 (sometimes as low as $4.79 if you're lucky). I tried name brand for $4 and still felt asleep hours later so no that wasn't going to work.

But today I had the pre-mixed caramel latte and it was really nice! So now I have three types of coffee to choose from, yay! I'm chalking this up as a small victory Smile

If you need the charge but don't need the taste so much of coffee you could try yerba mate, a beverage made from herbs, if it's reasonably priced and available where you live.

Oh wow, I looked that up, I'd never heard of it, it's kind of in the guarana family! Thanks, I may give it a try (especially as they are predicting coffee prices will skyrocket due to droughts in South America)

.26 cents per cuppa sounds reasonable when buying at Starbucks costs $ 5. Have you costed out using re-useable pods that you fill yourself with regular coffee? We buy Kirkland brand beans from Costco as the write up says they are actually Starbucks, and grind a week's supply every Sunday AM. If you prefer flavoured coffee, you can buy Caramel or preferred flavouring in baking supplies along with Vanilla, Almond etc a mere drop will do. We were gifted high quality hot chocolate tidbits for hot chocolate drinks but prefer to treat ourselves with 1/8 tsp. tidbits to coffee as a Sunday AM treat.

Hi Snafu.. We don't have reuseable pods anywhere that I've seen.. When we first got the machine I found a way to re-use the pods where after the first use you rip off the pod cover, then when you use it next put your coffee in and cover it over with foil but I found that not only was it time-consuming but just tasted awful.. Thanks for your advice on the flavouring though, I've seen that at the supermarket, it looks alright.
